UNEP West Asia regional consultation workshop | Amman, Jordan

The UNEP Regional Office for West Asia (UNEP-WA) convened a high-level meeting with Member States, UN agencies and active regional institutions working on air pollution to foster a coordinated approach for air quality management in West Asia.

The UNEP-WA proposed the establishment of the West Asia Air Quality Network, allowing the exchange of information, resources and good practices between the West Asian countries. This network will facilitate intergovernmental cooperation while further emphasizing the fight for clean air.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and UNEP hosted a side event at the sixty-first session of the Working Group on Strategies and Review with Member States, UN agencies and active organizations working on air pollution. The moderated event featured expert panellists who highlighted joint efforts from countries, the UNECE Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution, UNEP and other UN organizations on clean air in the Pan-European region.

WHO: New opportunities for air pollution and health education Online

In a landmark collaboration with over 30 international experts, the World Health Organization (WHO) has developed the first Air Pollution and Health Training toolkit specifically tailored for health workers to be unveiled at the end of 2023. In anticipation of its launch, WHO hosted an online training webinar that showcased key initiatives and previews the toolkit.

ESCAP, UNEP ROAP: Operationalizing the Regional Action Programme on Air Pollution Online

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and UNEP Regional Office for Asia and Pacific (UNEP ROAP) convened a meeting and exchange session to implement a project on operationalizing the Asia-Pacific Regional Action Programme on Air Pollution (RAPAP), including through the establishment of Working Groups on Data and Air Quality Standards. 

The project seeks to build a foundation of knowledge and expertise to support the acceleration of policies and practices to address air pollution and achieve air quality across the region that meets WHO guidelines. The Working Groups will support review of standards across the region and existing and emerging data sources that can be more widely shared to support more robust policymaking.

This meeting will help emphasize that everyone has a role to play in the fight against air pollution given its transboundary nature.

ESCAP convenes an informal round-table discussion with countries involved in the Pan-Asia Partnership for Geospatial Air Pollution Information.

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the challenges and success they have experienced and give feedback on planned activities for the coming year to build the Pandora Asia Network and promote cooperation.

SEI with the UNEP Regional Office for Africa, Safaricom, Athletics Kenya (AK) and the Slum Dwellers International Kenya (SDI-K), hosted by the county government of Nakuru, will host in-depth sessions and activities to mark Clean Air Day. This includes an introduction to air quality data acquisition and management, updates on the status of air quality in Nakuru and a tree-planting exercise.

UNEP, UNCT, UNRCO Serbia commemoration UN House, Belgrade, Serbia

UNEP, in partnership with the UN Country Team Serbia (UNCT) and the UN Resident Coordinator Office Serbia (UNRCO), convenes an event with UN agencies and the NGO Res Foundation to share their work to address air quality issues in Serbia.

This event will showcase UNEP-led joint work – involving the UN Development Programme, the UN Office for Project Services and UNICEF – to address air pollution from domestic heating sources in Serbia.

The Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL) and the Institute for Health and Environment Slovenia convene a meeting and exchange session with stakeholders and civil society interested and involved in clean air efforts.

Stakeholders from each region of Europe will have a conversation on clean air efforts and good practices, emphasizing the future update of clean air standards in the European Union.

Webinar: Practical steps to eliminate the open burning of waste Online

The world is facing a waste-burning crisis. An estimated 40 per cent of waste globally is openly burned – in landfills, public spaces and backyards. Open burning is an urgent issue that drives the climate crisis, releases a toxic combination of pollutants into the environment and contributes to over 1 million deaths worldwide each year.

This webinar, hosted by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), draws from experiences across India and Africa, including lessons to support regional and global goals to eliminate the open dumping and burning of waste.

World Bank: #EndAirPollution: For Blue Skies and Better Health in South Asia | Online

People in South Asia lose about five years of life on average due to air pollution. These adverse health effects have high economic costs in terms of reduced labor productivity and foregone output, with annual welfare losses estimated at 10 per cent of the region’s GDP.

The World Bank convenes a panel of policymakers, health experts and clean-air advocates to explore innovative ways to protect the most vulnerable groups, examine the effects of poor air quality on people in South Asia and explore solutions that can help address key risks to health from air pollution.

Central America Integrated Roadmap on SLCP, Air Quality and Health Online

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) will present the results of the integrated roadmap on short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), air quality and health. It will also announce of Phase 2 of the collaboration. The event will be held in collaboration with the Central American Integration System, ministries of health and environment in Central American countries, UNEP, CCAC and Clean Air Institute.

Speakers from UNEP, NASA, the Smithsonian, academic institutions and Arlington Regional Master Naturalists will share information, findings, perspectives, and discoveries. In addition, an interactive learning experience will be provided on-site in the Ozone Bioindicator Garden and to Ozone Garden Network participants across the U.S.

The event will underscore the importance of understanding the impact of air pollution on human and ecosystem health and its environmental justice implications. The activities will align with the overarching Clean Air Day goals to raise awareness and spur action needed to combat air pollution and improve air quality.

The UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean regional office and North American regional office are partnering with PAHO and the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) to invite academic institutions, governments and civil society organizations doing citizen science to make air quality measurements in public places and share their results in real time.

UNEP ROAP: Air Pollution and Climate Solutions in Southeast Asia United Nations Conference Center, Bangkok, Thailand

The session is organized by Thailand’s Hub of Talents on Air Pollution and Climate (HTAPC). HTAPC is hosted by the Faculty of Public Health, Thammasat University, with support from the National Research Council of Thailand. UNEP ROAP is the co-organizer of this session and supports the hosting of a conference focusing on efforts to combat air pollution and address climate issues in an integrated manner in Southeast Asia.

It will feature the review of transregional haze pollution issue in Southeast Asia, 15 science-based clean air and climate solutions for ASEAN, and the promotion of national and sub-national initiatives related to integrated air quality management and climate change mitigation.
