A platform for action

The fourth International Day of Clean Air for blue skies takes place on 7 September 2023.

Held under the theme "Together for Clean Air", it focuses on the need for stronger partnerships, increased investment and shared responsibility to overcome air pollution.

The United Nations General Assembly designated 7 September as International Day of Clean Air for blue skies in 2019, and the first Day was held in 2020. This follows the international community’s increasing awareness of the risks of air pollution and emphasizes the need to make further efforts to improve air quality to protect human and environmental health.

Air pollution is an environmental risk not only to human health, but also to the planetary health. It has detrimental impacts on climate, biodiversity and ecosystems. Improving our air quality will bring health, development and environmental benefits.

This International Day of Clean Air for blue skies, we call upon everyone, governments and corporations to civil society and individuals to work together to reduce air pollution and bring a transformative change for to achieve healthy air for all.

Air pollution disproportionately affects children and the elderly, and it negatively impacts ecosystems. Improving air quality is essential to mitigating the impacts of many air pollutants that contribute directly to the climate crisis. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development also recognizes that air pollution abatement is important to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

International Day of Clean Air for blue skies aims to build a global community of action that encourages countries to work together to tackle air pollution to ensure that we can protect our ecosystems. To this end, it gives people a platform that can enable cooperation at the individual, national, regional, and international levels to work #TogetherForCleanAir.
